Table Readthroughs

Part of our remit is to help actors connect with industry professionals. We do that in two ways: by inviting in casting directors and agents, etc… to take workshops with us, and by taking the class out into the industry, mainly via our table reading service (either in the room or on zoom)

The table reading service is a free resource for writers, playwrights, producers and filmmakers to experience their script – at different draft stages –  being read out loud by professional actors. We supply feedback if required, and assistance with character development where appropriate.

All actors who attend our classes on a regular basis are invited to join the table reading service to develop their network and gain more experience.

Ongoing acting classes

At Bubble & Squeak actors’ workshop, we continue to provide affordable ongoing acting classes to actors of all ages and backgrounds. We address the (sometimes harsh) realities of the entertainment industry and suggest solutions. We encourage actors to make bold, creative choices with conviction and confidence.

Through our workshops, we invite filmmakers, directors and producers to watch our classes when seeking to cast their projects. Writers are sometimes invited to workshop their work by collaborating with our actors. Our workshops and frequent showcases have led to over 60 offers of representation from agents.

Your instructor – Paul McNeilly – is a professional actor accredited with over 70 TV and Film. So everything you will learn, he has used at some point in his career to secure parts in auditions and  delivered on set.

No theories or guesswork, only a tried and proven approach !

       OUR PROCESS

Bubble & Squeak Acting classes are weekly classes for professionals to undertake scene study, script analysis, sight-reading, audition technique and discuss the current demands of the industry. We don’t retrain professional actors, but we do advocate an intensely practical approach with an emphasis on emotional truth, and thorough preparation, covering screen and theatre.

We don’t try to ‘sum up’ acting in any way, rather we look at, and discuss, possibilities in performance. Having professional experience will really be useful, especially as our workshops are production/project-led.

We look at how developing a highly responsive interior-world is not only one of the ingredients to creating a believable character on screen but how it can (and should) push the narrative forwards. A brilliant screen actor doesn’t even need lines to do this; they can do it simply by listening (with precision) and reacting.

However, reacting to external events isn’t all there is. Reacting to one’s own thoughts is another (often overlooked) aspect of building an expressive interior-world.

As well as scene study, we also look at examples from films to see it in action.

Although non-exclusive, we actively encourage working class actors, writers and producers to join the profession and bring their unique perspectives and imaginations with them.

some of the reasons actors tend to come to Bubble & Squeak

01.

hone your skills

keep ‘performance’ sharp and take artistic risks in a supportive environment (we often ask actors to direct scenes so they understand what this looks like).

02.

deal with the pressure

All performance places an actor ‘on the spot’ – how you deal with that and learn to thrive under pressure will often determine how successful you will be.

03.

extend your training

We don’t retrain professional actors, but we do advocate an intensely practical approach with an emphasis on emotional truth, covering screen and theatre.

04.

self-confidence

Confidence could be the biggest obstacle between you and getting the job. Whether you are re-entering the industry after time away, or you need to rebuild your confidence.

05.

navigate the industry

You will learn the unwritten rules/ etiquettes. Unfortunately they are rarely taught. Our industry contacts have shared counteless stories of actors working their ways out of roles for unknowingly breaking them.

06.

collaborate

One of the most rewarding aspects of the class is the possibility for collaboration. Either between the actors, with a filmmaker/writer, or even our very own production company.

07.

connect with the industry

To stay involved and keep connected with the industry.

TESTIMONIALS

I trained under Paul McNeilly. I didn’t really go to a drama college or anything like that – it was just him and he taught me everything. He even taught me a little bit of directing and writing. You can never know too much about the business – it’s always helpful.

Charlie Clapham,

(Freddie Roscoe, Hollyoaks) – Digital Spy

‘I got two jobs in South Africa! One on a BBC show called ‘Our Girl‘ and now a role on the US ‘Black Sails‘. I can’t thank you enough because without your guidance and training I would have been lost. Thank you again for everything’.

Laura Higgins

‘Just to say thank you for having me at your class and that it really helped me on my journey. I used the sight reading in my audition for the film Are We Dead Yet and I believe without that technique I wouldn’t have got a leading role in the film’.

Bradley Turner

‘I attended the Film Acting Course and several of your acting workshops… you were also kind enough to recommend me to my agent. Your valuable tuition put me on the road to membership of Spotlight and several acting credits. A big thank you to you Paul. To any aspiring actors: I very much recommend Paul McNeilly, a brilliant actor’s coach’
